Majorna is an old working-class district known for its “Landshövdingehus” (governor’s houses) and a bit of its own atmosphere — a city within the city. Shipping, shipyards, fishing and trade are largely what shaped Majorna, and many sailors, fishermen and boatmen have enjoyed themselves here. Most of Majorna is within walking distance and well worth visiting, including the Maritime Museum, Gatenhielmska reserve, Klippan with Röda sten, Nya Varvet and Slottskogen. For those who get up early, the auction down in the fish harbor is also a tip. A large number of restaurants, pubs and bars are scattered throughout the district and as most Majorna residents have noted, there is really no reason to leave Majorna. But should the need arise, it only takes 10 minutes to get to the center with the tram.
